F1 Season-opener In Bahrain Called OffThe Formula One season’s opener in Bahrain has been called off due to the current unrest in the country, according to organizers. “The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) announced that the Kingdom of Bahrain would withdraw from hosting this year’s F1 Grand Prix race so that the country can focus on its process of national dialogue,” they said.
The leaders of the country said to withdraw from the event in order to “focus on overcoming tragedy and healing divisions in the wake of the civil unrest.”
The crown prince of Bahrain, Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa, informed Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone of his decision by telephone earlier on Monday.
“Although Bernie Ecclestone had graciously made clear a decision on the race was entirely Bahrain’s to make and was not yet required, we felt it was important for the country to focus on immediate issues of national interest and leave the hosting of Bahrain’s Formula One race to a later date.
The decision now means the Australian Grand Prix will be the host of the first Grand Prix of the season on March 27, 2011. It is still unknown if the Bahrain race would be rescheduled.
