airfilterHave you changed your car’s air filter lately? If you answered no, you aren’t alone. Despite the benefits, air filter replacement and other simple DIY car maintenance is commonly overlooked, even though it can keep your car running optimally and help prevent long-term damage. Over time, air filters become clogged with tiny dirt particles that escape into the engine and hinder performance. According to a 2009 study conducted by Oak Ridge Laboratory, replacing a dirty and clogged air filter with a new one can lead to increased horsepower and acceleration – reason enough to regularly check it.
So what kind of filter should you buy and when should you replace it? “It’s crucial to use the right kind of filter to ensure the higher air filter efficiency for the best possible engine protection,” said Megan Currie, marketing manager for Honeywell Consumer Products Group. Furthermore, for optimal performance, air filters should be changed every 20,000 kilometres or as directed in your owner’s manual.
Currie recommends using a quality air filter such as a Fram Extra Guard, which provides two times the engine protection of the average of the leading standard retail brands and can be installed with three easy steps. Engine protection is the Fram measure of a filter’s ability to trap dirt particles and keep them from entering your engine. This product traps harmful particles while helping your engine “breathe.” In Honeywell laboratory tests of the same category air filters, the Fram Extra Guard air filters allowed less than one percent of particles to penetrate the filter into the engine, while the average of leading standard retail brands allowed about twice that amount.
“Changing your vehicle’s clogged air filter is an easy and inexpensive way to keep your engine running at its best, and help extend the life of your car,” said Currie.
